With Artificial Intelligence (AI) leading today’s conversations about innovation and governance, Martel Innovate and its non-profit organisation, Digital for Planet, is pleased to play a continued role in in the conversation.
Aligned with this mission, Digital for Planet (D4P) was recently invited to participate in the Swiss Internet Governance Forum (IGF) 2024 on June 5 in Bern, Switzerland. Contributions by Dr. Anna Aseeva, a sustainability expert at D4P, significantly enhanced the conversations during “Session 5: AI and Disinformation: How Can We Counteract the Loss of Trust in Reporting?,” as well as the overall impact of the Swiss IGF.
During the session, it was emphasised that authenticating sources and authorship is more crucial than merely labelling AI-generated content. The challenge encompasses both the supply side (media and platforms) and the demand side (consumers of AI-generated content). Promoting media literacy and general digital literacy is essential for fostering trust in digital content. Recently, D4P has highlighted digital literacy as a vital factor in reducing the digital divide.
Dr. Anna Aseeva underscored the importance of legal certainty and liability for AI-generated content and its sources during her panel intervention. She emphasised the need for clear, harmonised and publicly accessible guidelines on the limits and opportunities of using AI, including in research. Innovative technologies, including AI, should be economically and socially sustainable — bridging the digital divide and ensuring they are trustworthy, secure, and liable, thus minimising user insecurity.
Martel Innovate is proud to be at the forefront of these critical discussions within the organisation and its non-profit spin-off, Digital for Planet, as we move forward the agenda of a more trustworthy and sustainable digital future.
