To-Euro-5G: Supporting the 5G-PPP

The To-Euro-5G project has a prime objective to support the activities of the European 5G Initiative during the second phase of the 5G PPP from June 2017 to June 2019. The 5G PPP Phase 2 projects will be obliged by Article 41.4 of their respective grant agreements to enact a Collaboration Agreement and participate in a number of strategic cross project horizontal activities and To-Euro-5G will assist with orchestrating this agreement and these activities.
The To-Euro-5G project will further develop and progress a strategic communications plan to ensure the best possible impact is achieved with the technical results of the 5G PPP projects and the horizontal activities of the 5G PPP programme. The To-Euro-5G project will support the 5G PPP high level goal of maintaining and enhancing the competitiveness of the European ICT industry, and seeking European leadership in the 5G domain. The European 5G Action Plan[1] will require an overview of the 5G PPP projects trial/demo/showcase potential. The To-Euro-5G project will facilitate the new Trials Working Group, which was launched by the 5G Infrastructure Association in 5G PPP in September 2016. The To-Euro-5G project also has the underlying ambition to ensure that European society, via the Vertical sectors, can enjoy the economic and societal benefits these future 5G networks can provide.


FI-NEXT: FIWARE sustainability and evolution

FI-NEXT is the project leading the sustainability and evolution of FIWARE Platform and FIWARE Community. The FIWARE Community is an independent open community whose members are committed to materialise the FIWARE mission, that is: “to build an open sustainable ecosystem around public, royalty-free and implementation-driven software platform standards that will ease the development of new Smart Applications in multiple sectors”.The FIWARE Community is not only formed by contributors to the technology (the FIWARE platform) but also those who contribute in building the FIWARE ecosystem and making it sustainable over time. As such, individuals and organizations committing relevant resources in FIWARE Lab activities or activities of the FIWARE Accelerator, FIWARE Mundus or FIWARE iHubs programmes are also considered members of the FIWARE community.

U4IoT: User Engagement for Large Scale Pilots in the Internet of Things

U4IoT will support the EC selected Large Scale Pilots (LSPs) of the IoT-1 call. It will enable a citizen-driven process by combining multidisciplinary expertise and complementary mechanisms from the European state-of-the-art. It will also analyse societal, ethical and ecological issues related to the pilots in order to develop recommendations for tackling IoT adoption barriers, including educational needs and skill-building.

U4IoT combines complementary expertise from leading European partners in end-user engagement through crowdsourcing, Living Labs, co-creative workshops and meet-ups to support end-user engagement in the LSPs.

It will:

  • Develop a toolkit for LSP end-user engagement and adoption;
  • Support the mobilisation of end-user engagement;
  • Analyse societal, ethical and ecological issues related to the LSPs with end-user;
  • Support communication, knowledge sharing and dissemination.

It is worth mentioning that Martel is selected as one of the 2 organisations from U4IoT consortium to be involved in the IoT-LSP Cluster Activity Group for Communication, Collaboration, Strategy and Liaisons.

FLAME: Facility for Large-scale Adaptive Media Experimentation

FLAME aims to develop an integrated software platform that utilizes the advances of compute & storage as well as software-based communication infrastructures, specifying the functional as well as interface-level elements
of such platform and deploying at large-scale experimental infrastructures across Europe. FLAME must develop the necessary extensions to existing solutions in order to accommodate the stringent requirements of the FMI solutions. Specifically, we must investigate areas such as information-centric networking in order to provide servicelevel routing with efficient integration into emerging SDN infrastructure, enabling the provisioning of service endpoints in the range of a few milliseconds. New models of distributing computing must be investigated that exploit edge compute & storage resources to dynamically place, migrate and manage services closer to consumers with the goal of providing the service ‘just one hop away’ in order to fulfil stringent 5G performance requirements such as 5ms service-level delay and service provisioning latencies of a few seconds only.

HUB4NGI: Hub for Next Generation Internet

HUB4NGI is the first Coordination and Support Action dedicated to transform the Next Generation Internet initiative into an increasingly dynamic, collaborative, vibrant and participatory Research and Innovation Ecosystem.

HUB4NGI aims to offer a collaborative platform capable of effectively supporting and coordinating activities across the whole NGI context by combining knowledge, tools and processes to reach and engage top-notch Internet researchers and innovators.

The selected and carefully designed activities HUB4NGI will pursue have been organised around 5 main work packages: the NGI APPROACH, the NGI GUIDE, the NGI CATALYST, the NGI BOOST and the NGI FIGHTER. By close interaction of orchestrated activities, HUB4NGI is covering strategy and operation by:

  • Defining a methodology for collecting and assessing the information in the NGI domain.
  • Grounding the NGI vision, strategy and plans.
  • Accelerating the NGI programme implementation.
  • Running community building and outreach activities.

HUB4NGI will finally serve the whole NGI community to grow and liaise with relevant European, international, national and regional initiatives.

Fed4FIRE+: Federation for FIRE Plus

Fed4FIRE+ project will run and improve on the existing Fed4FIRE federation experimentation new facilities for the Future Internet Research. Through a system of Open Calls, developers and innovators can run experiments using a wide range of testbed infrastructures made available from Fed4FIRE+ federation.

Fed4FIRE+ will also organize engineering conferences with the aim to strengthen the interaction among the different stakeholders involved.

ORCA: Orchestration and Reconfiguration Control Architecture

ORCA offers experimentation facilities to promote wireless innovation in several market segments, including manufacturing, automotive industry, healthcare, ambient assistant living, public events, home automation, and utilities. Within the manufacturing market, for instance, application requirements vary from very low latency, up to real-time 3D video-driven interaction between collaborative robots and humans, to non-time critical downloads of large data volumes for updating the software of machines.

Different applications and services often have to share the wireless infrastructure and the spectral bands, making it very challenging to meet the diverging QoS requirements simultaneously. The control mechanisms that are provided today in wireless technologies are not adequate to deal with extreme (ultra-low latency, ultra-high throughput, ultra- high reliability) and diverging (low AND high data rate, time-critical AND non-time critical) communication needs. Interesting evolutions are happening at different levels, enabling the creation of parallel on demand wireless network slices optimized for a specific set of requirements.

EXCITING: EU-China Study on Iot and 5G

The EU-China Study on IoT and 5G (EXCITING) is a 26-month initiative jointly funded by the European Commission, the Chinese government and the swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI). The overall objective of EXCITING is to support the creation of favourable conditions for co-operation between the European and Chinese research and innovation ecosystems, mainly related to strategic domains linked to the Future Internet (e.g. IoT and 5G), aiming to identify relevant and practical opportunities for future co-operation between these parties.

FIWARE Mexico: Enhancing FIWARE collaboration between Europe and Mexico

The FIWARE Mexico initiative aims to enhance FIWARE-driven collaboration between Europe and Mexico, based on the adoption, deployment and improvement of FIWARE in Mexico as a framework that will open up new horizons for future cooperation in the ICT domain.

  • FIWARE Mexico is establishing Working Groups to engage innovators from the industry, research communities and end users, such as Smart Cities players, in the FIWARE ecosystem.
  • In parallel, dedicated FIWARE technology’ training programmes are being implemented for developers, integrators and contributors, embracing the whole open source community, which will facilitate the adoption of FIWARE technologies and the development of applications to be commercialized in Mexico and Europe.
  • Moreover, synergies between the European and worldwide FIWARE community will be fostered via close cooperation, coordinated promotional/communication efforts and via know-how transfer about success stories and good practices guidelines for increased stakeholders’ engagement.

QV-LIFT - Q/V band earth segment LInk for Future high Throughput space systems

The QV-LIFT project aims at developing the foundation of the Ground Segment Technology for the future Q/V band Terabit SatCom systems. This will be done providing core technologies at two levels of the communication stack. At hardware level, key RF building blocks and subsystems in the Q/V band will be developed that will fill a specific and well known European technology gap; at network level, QV-LIFT will develop a Q/V band smart gateways management system able to counteract the propagation impairments which presents one of the main obstacles in the deployment of the Q/V band feeders system. Both hardware and network developments will be demonstrated to be at TRL6 in a unique and realistic test environment where a mobile Q/V band terminal and three Earth stations will be linked to the Alphasat payload to create the QV-LIFT smart gateway network.

Since February 2016, the FIRE STUDY project, which Martel Innovate is coordinating, provides support to the European Commission to coordinate activities across the Future Internet Research and Experimentation, FIRE, community, working to :

  • Create an on-line inventory that builds on a complete and accurate map of all experimental infrastructures available in Europe for Next Generation Internet experimentation on the basis of the XiPi platform.
  • Support the implementation and evolution of the FIRE strategy and roadmap by assessing current capabilities, needs and evolution trends within the Next Generation Internet context.
  • Ensure cohesive community building, events organisation and participation as well as dissemination and communication activities across the various large-scale experimentation-focused projects.
  • Monitor and assess the progress and effectiveness of FIRE activities by collecting and evaluating Key Performance Indicators in close collaboration with the EC.
  • Elaborate policy recommendations for Future Internet experimentation for 2018-2020 as a concrete mean to support the EC and all NGI innovators to properly steer future R&D&I activities.


ChiC: Creating high impact for CAPS

ChIC is a Coordination and Support Action, funded under the ICT-10-2015 Call, which aims at boosting the emergence of the CAPSSI, Collective Awareness Platforms for Sustainability and Social Innovation, initiative by offering networking, know-how and promotion so as to gather and grow the overall community of CAPSSI stakeholders.

The main goal of the ChiC consortium, which Martel is coordinating, is to facilitate the encounters and collaboration of the widest number of individuals, initiatives, projects and organisation sharing this common social commitment and create impact within the European landscape.

eWINE: Elastic WIreless Networking Experimentation

The main goal of eWINE is to realize elastic networks that can scale to a high number of users in a short timespan through the use of an agile infrastructure (intelligent software and flexible hardware).

EURO 5G: Supporting the European 5G Initiative

The primary objective of the Euro-5g project is to facilitate effective and efficient co-operation and integration between all projects of the 5G-PPP, the European Commission, The 5G-Infrastructure Association, related projects from Eureka, and related national initiatives to maximize the European momentum towards, and benefits from, the future 5G integrated, ubiquitous and ultra-high capacity networks. The metrics for evaluating the success of this will be based on the KPIs included in the 5G-PPP contract signed by the European ICT Industry and the European Commission in 2013.


RIFE: architectuRe for an Internet For Everybody

RIFE addresses the major societal challenge of providing affordable Internet access to those who cannot afford it by solving the technological challenge to increase the efficiency of the underlying transport networks and the involved architectures and protocols.
The RIFE solution will harness unused transmission capacity, combined with placing content caches and service functionality closer to the user and will use heterogeneous transmission opportunities that range from localized mesh and home networks over well-connected ISP backhauls to scarce satellite resources. RIFE will build upon recent advances on information-centric and delay-tolerant networking by developing optimized dissemination strategies for the involved transport networks, unified within a novel communication architecture that will provide clear abstractions to application developers.


SSICLOPS: Scalable and Secure Infrastructures for Cloud Operations

SSICLOPS will empower enterprises to create and operate high-performance private cloud infrastructure that allows flexible scaling through federation with other private clouds without compromising on their service level and security requirements. SSICLOPS federation will support the efficient integration of clouds, no matter if they are geographically collocated or spread out, belong to the same or different administrative entities or jurisdictions: in all cases, SSICLOPS will deliver maximum performance for inter-cloud communication, enforce legal and security constraints, and minimize the overall resource consumption. In such a federation, individual enterprises will be able dynamically scale in/out their private cloud services: because they dynamically offer own spare resources (when available) and take in resources from others when needed. This allows maximizing own infrastructure utilization while minimizing excess capacity needs for each federation member.
