Martel is proud to celebrate a major milestone in the 6G-XR project: its recognition as one of the Top-10 Key Achievements of 2025 by the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU). This distinction highlights the project’s advanced efforts in enabling the future of immersive services.
Each year, the SNS JU identifies the most impactful results across its portfolio of research and innovation projects. For the first time in 2025, this evaluation brought together 188 submissions from 63 projects, spotlighting the technologies and ideas that will shape Europe’s path toward 6G. The selected Top-10 cover breakthroughs in technology development, real-world trials, standards contributions, experimentation, and sustainability.
A breakthrough for European 6G innovation
6G-XR’s achievement, Multiple Holographic Communications Integrated into the 6G-XR Testbed, marks a remarkable step toward next-generation immersive services. The project successfully delivered the first holographic calls over a 6G network, demonstrating real-time, app-free communication using both augmented and virtual reality channels.
This innovation showcases how future networks can support scalable multiuser XR experiences while reducing device processing needs. It opens new pathways for:
- More accessible and inclusive XR applications
- New digital service models for telecoms, device manufacturers, and cloud providers
- Cross-sector opportunities spanning entertainment, remote collaboration, education, and industry
As part of the Experimentation category, 6G-XR’s work also validates how cloud-native and edge computing capabilities can power truly network-native holographic communication — a vision that is central to Europe’s 6G ambitions.
Driving 6G-XR impact
This breakthrough was demonstrated publicly during the 6G-XR Impact Day, the project’s final showcase event, recently held on 28 October 2025 at NEXTONIC – IMDEA Networks Institute in Madrid, Spain. The demo allowed participants to experience holographic communication running natively over the 6G-XR testbed.
Martel led the organisation of the event in close collaboration with local project partners, bringing together industry leaders, researchers, innovators, and SMEs to explore the project’s results and their implications for the future of immersive services. As task leader for communication and dissemination, Martel has steered the project’s outreach strategy from the beginning, ensuring that technical advancements translate into strong engagement with industry, research communities, and the public.
In addition, Martel is also work package leader for the cascaded funding programme, coordinating three Open Calls that supported 30 external projects, significantly expanding the impact and reach of the 6G-XR testbed. These open innovation projects played a crucial role in testing, validating, and enriching the platform’s capabilities.
Recognising the impact of collaboration
The SNS JU leadership praised the achievements of the 2025 cohort. Colin Willcock, Chairman of the Board of the 6G Industry Association and Vice-Chairman of the SNS JU, emphasised the impact of this work in “creating the future 6G world,” while Executive Director Erzsebet Fitori highlighted how these results illustrate “the real-life impact EU-funded research can make.”
Martel, as a committed partner in 6G-XR, is delighted to support communication, dissemination, and engagement efforts that help bring these innovations to the wider community.
Explore the achievements
The SNS JU has launched an online repository showcasing all Top-10 innovations and the broader set of submissions. A public webinar will soon be organised to present the tool and discuss the implications for Europe’s connected future.
