Massimo Neri on Martel’s Role in the 6G landscape

As a Board Member of one6G, how do you see your role in shaping the direction of 6G research and innovation?
My position on the one6G board allows me to contribute to the technical direction of 6G. With my background in telecommunications and my role as CTO at Martel, I am focused on the convergence of networking and computing. I aim to drive innovation in areas like AI-driven network automation, cloud-native architectures, and the integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks, which are all critical for realizing the full potential of 6G.

In your opinion, what projects that Martel is involved in will have a significant impact on the future of 6G?
Martel is deeply engaged in the one6G ecosystem, most notably through our coordination of the 6G4Society project. This initiative is focused on ensuring that the development of 6G technology is guided by societal needs and values. We are also actively involved in the SNS-JU-funded 6G-NTN project, where we are developing AI-driven network forecasting techniques using cloud-native tools to orchestrate the convergence of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks.

How does Martel’s experience with EU-funded projects benefit the one6G association and its members?
Our strength at Martel lies in our ability to bridge the gap between research and market implementation. We have almost 30 years of experience in managing complex innovation projects, from securing funding to developing go-to-market strategies. This expertise is invaluable to one6G, as it helps to translate cutting-edge research into tangible products and services that will define the 6G era.

What advice would you give to organizations that want to get involved in shaping 6G?My primary advice is to embrace collaboration and openness. 6G is too complex for any single organization to tackle alone. Get involved in industry associations like one6G, participate in open-source projects, and actively seek out partnerships with academia and other companies. The future of 6G is being built on a foundation of shared knowledge and collective innovation.

Martel’s work in the 6G landscape goes beyond the contributions of our CTO. Our role as the coordinator of the 6G4Society Coordination and Support Action and our deep involvement in Research and Innovation Actions like 6G-NTN are a testament to our commitment to shaping a responsible and technologically advanced future. Through these and other projects, such as UNITY-6G, we are helping to ensure that Europe’s leadership in 6G is built on a foundation of shared knowledge, collaboration, and a focus on societal benefit.
