In a busy and impactful week for the FLUIDOS project, Martel Innovate, with its dual role in the project (project coordination and the leadership of communication, dissemination, and community-building activities), ensured the project’s strong presence at the NexusForum 2024 and the Unlock-CEI final event. These two key industry events, which led up to the AIOTI Days 2024, provided a valuable platform to highlight the project’s achievements in the cloud-edge-IoT continuum, including its innovative MetaOS framework. Martel played a pivotal role in guiding FLUIDOS’ outreach and engagement strategies to ensure that FLUIDOS’ objectives, use cases, and open calls were effectively communicated to a broad audience of stakeholders, including researchers, industry partners, and policymakers.
FLUIDOS (Flexible, scaLable, secUre, and decentralIseD Operating System) is a Horizon Europe project that aims to leverage the enormous, unused processing capacity at the edge, scattered across heterogeneous edge devices that struggle to integrate with each other and to coherently form a seamless computing continuum. Coordinated by Martel, the FLUIDOS consortium comprises 16 members, including industrial and academic experts in cloud computing and edge computing.
NexusForum
At NexusForum 2024, held in Brussels, Stefano Galantino from the Polytechnic University of Turin presented FLUIDOS’ groundbreaking work in creating an open edge-to-cloud continuum. Stefano highlighted FLUIDOS’ approach to resource transparency, emphasising how FLUIDOS aggregates resources across the cloud-edge-IoT ecosystem to enable seamless, scalable, and sustainable operations. The REAR protocol (Resource Advertisement and Reservation), a cornerstone of FLUIDOS’ architecture, was a key feature of his talk, demonstrating how FLUIDOS is paving the way towards a more interconnected, carbon-aware computing continuum.
Unlock-CEI
Following NexusForum, the Unlock-CEI final event further solidified FLUIDOS’ footprint in the field. During the event, Albert Seubers, the Director of Martel Innovate NL, presented FLUIDOS’ success story, shedding light on how the project enhances power grid resilience and scalability. The session emphasised the MetaOS’s ability to deploy resources efficiently and transparently, creating real-world impacts in sectors like energy, logistics, and agriculture.
AIOTI Days
These two events led up to AIOTI Days 2024, where FLUIDOS organised a workshop, building on the momentum generated at NexusForum and Unlock-CEI. During the workshop, several members of the FLUIDOS consortium delivered in-depth presentations on the role of MetaOS in the cloud-edge-IoT ecosystem, demonstrating FLUIDOS’ solutions through its various use cases.

Plans ahead
FLUIDOS has now entered into a critical, final phase of the project, where the focus shifts towards demonstrating the impact of its MetaOS solutions in real-world scenarios. A series of pilot demonstrations will showcase the practical applications of FLUIDOS in various industries, including energy, agriculture, and logistics. These demos are expected to underline the scalability, security, and energy efficiency of the MetaOS framework. The project’s final outcomes will significantly contribute to the future of decentralised, edge-based computing solutions across Europe, and the FLUIDOS consortium partners are committed to ensuring the sustainability and long-term impact of the innovations developed within the project.
Building on the experience and new relationships gained via the participation in FLUIDOS, Martel plans to further consolidate its expertise within the cloud-edge-IoT continuum by fostering new collaborations and engaging in innovative project proposals within the domain.
